The Lok Sabha today passed National Tax Tribunal Bill which aims at speedy disposal of customs, excise, service, and income tax cases. The national tribunal, to be set up under the bill, will also consider appeals against the tax tribunals.

Union Law Minister H.R. Bhardwaj justified the need for a tribunal saying most judges specialised in civil law. Matters pertaining to direct and indirect tax laws would be transferred to the national tribunal, to be headed by the chief justice of a HC, Bhardwaj said.

The was passed with the support of the BJP but , it was criticised by CPM’s V. Radhakrishnan, who said it was meant to provide appointment to top bureaucrats on the verge of retirement. He said, cases could accumulate regardless of tribunal as appeals against it could go to the Supreme Court.
