Schools and businesses were closed and many vehicles remained off the roads in Kathmandu today during a general strike called by college students to protest against a student’s death on April 8, when the police opened fire on a violent demonstration against a hike in oil prices in Butwal, about 280 km southwest of Kathmandu. A few security and government vehicles were seen on the streets of Kathmandu. Only government offices were open.
Life was also affected in other parts of Nepal.
