South Korean consumer electronics maker Samsung on Friday said it will invest $10 million in India over 2005 into its upcoming GSM phone manufacturing facility in Manesar, Haryana.
The plant will serve the local, South Asian and West Asian markets and will have the capacity to manufacture 20 million GSM as well as CDMA handsets a year by 2010, company officials said.
‘‘This plant will be a critical turning point for our mobile business in India. We have invested $5 million already, and will invest another $10 million by the first half of next year. Production will start by the first quarter of 2006,’’ Samsung India’s Director of Telecom H.C. Ryu said here.
The facility will have an initial capacity for 1 million units a year and employ 200 people who will work on two handset models.
‘‘To start with, the phones will be priced at around Rs 5,000 apiece,’’ Ryu said.
