Chennai, Jan 1: Rest of India brought the C K Nayudu champions South Zone to earth with a 66-run victory to claim the Vinoo Mankad Trophy under-19 cricket match at M A Chidambaram stadium here on Friday.

Put in to bat, Rest piled up 237 for four and shot out South for 171.Left-hand batsman, Niraj Patel, who came at No.3, was the top scorer for the Rest. He made merry with an undefeated knock of 81 off 118 deliveries with four hits to the fence. Others to contribute for the winners were Asif Murtaza (44, 59b, 4×4), Shib Sagar Singh (32 n.o., 38b, 1×6), Arindam Das (24), Pushkaraj Yadhav (20).

South conceded 30 extras, inclusive of 25 wides. Goa’s medium pacer Kapil Anyle, who made his debut today, claimed two for 42.

For South, barring Rowland Barrington (25), Santhosh Yadav (44, 75b, 5×4) and Rajat Bhatia (50, 72b, 2×4, 2×6) others fumbled.

Left-arm medium pacer Sallabh Srivastava was mainly responsible for South’s defeat. He claimed the first four wickets — Venugopal (0), C Hemanth Kumar (12), SunilViswanathan (2) and Barrington to leave South gasping for breath. The efforts taken by Rajat Bhatia, who has been in fine form, and Santhosh Yadav, was not enough to repair the damage already done. Rest skipper Riteender Sodhi and Misu Raza lent their hands with two wickets each.

Scores: Rest of India 237 for 4 in 50 overs (Asif Murtaza 44, Niraj Patel 81 n.o, Shib Sagar Singh 32) bt South Zone 171 in 44.3 overs Rowland Barrington 25, Santhosh Yadav 44, Rajat Bhatia 50, Sallabh Srivastava 4 for 32).
