CHANDIGARH, July 12: The provisional affiliation granted to the Dhanwantri Ayurvedic Medical College for admission to the first professional year has been withdrawn. No fresh admission will be allowed in the college during this academic session.
According to university sources, this decision will not affect the students who are already pursuing studies in the second and third professional year in the college.
This decision was taken by the Panjab University despite the fact that it had conducted an entrance test last month for admission to this college, along with the test for admission to the homoeopathic college and the university honours school.
The decision of the university follows a telegram by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) to the college and the Panjab University recommending withdrawal of affiliation. The communication of the university withdrawing the affiliation states "in view of the above telegram, the grant of provisional affiliation to your college for the first year professional bachelor of ayurvedic medicine (BAMS) course stands withdrawn by the university for the session 1998-99."
The issue of grant of affiliation to the Dhanwantri Ayurvedic College had become contentious with a few university senators raising the issue of non-conformance to university guidelines by the college in the last meeting of the university senate. It is learnt that the CCIM had recently sent an inspection committee to the college. However the college authorities claim that they had asked the inspection committee to postpone the visit.
