The BJP was all set for a repeat of its 1999 Bellary drama, but in vain. For, the Congress chose not to repeat its old script.
BJP president M. Venkaiah Naidu, accompanied by Telugu actress Vijayashanthi, waited at Hyderabad airport this afternoon to see if Priyanka flew to Bellary to file her nomination papers.
Had she done so, Vijayashanthi too would have gone to Bellary to file her nomination papers to counter her.
Sources said that party leaders were constantly monitoring flights today to find out if any aircraft was going to Bellary. The BJP gave up the idea of fielding Vijayashanthi when it became known that Congress was not fielding Priyanka.
Earlier, the BJP had countered the surprise move of Congress president Sonia Gandhi to contest from Bellary by fielding Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj against her.
