Swamp to sandwich: Florida gators sliced and diced

Roughly 6,000 alligators are killed each year in Florida end up as inside hamburger buns or a shelf full of handbags and souvenir heads.

The knives are sharpened at All American Gator Products in south Florida. It’s the end of the line for about 1,000 alligators killed during this year’s hunting season.

Roughly 6,000 alligators are killed each year in Florida during the 11-week public hunting season. Most end up at one of the state’s 34 licensed processors.

All American processes roughly 200,000 pounds (90,720 kilograms) of alligator meat annually for sale to restaurants in 38 states.

The company last year had about $1.2 million in sales,70 per cent from alligator meat.
