Defending champion Rupesh Shah from India continued his fine run in the World Billiards Championship as he notched up convincing wins over his respective opponents in the Point Format in Leeds. Shah reigned supreme on the green baize in the short 150-up format to beat Irelands Wayne Doyle,Englands Aaron Davies,Australias Grant Meadley and Vietnams Long Nguyen Thanh and top the Group A. In the other Indian matches,Arun Agarwal had a mixed outing in the Group C as he won one and lost one while Balachandra Bhaskar made won both his matches in Group E. Saurav Kothari won all his four matches in Group I to progress to the next round of the prestigious event.
Seven for World IBSF Snooker
A seven-member Indian contingent was selected for the World IBSF Snooker Championship to be played in Latvia from November 28 to December 8. The womens squad comprises of Vidya Pillai,Neena Praveen,Arantxa Sanchis and Chitra M while the mens team includes Manan Chandra,Brijesh Damani and Shahbaaz Adil Khan. The Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI) organised two back-to-back selection camps in Bangalore from October 21 to 23 and handpicked the womens team based on their rankings. Vidya and Arantxas trip will be funded by the government while Chitras travel expenses will be borne by the DYSS and Arantxa will travel at her own cost. The duo of Chandra and Damani will be travelling at the governments cost while Shahbaaz will take care of his own expenditure,BSFI said.
Poonia joins Congress
Discus thrower Krishna Poonia today joined the Congress at party vice-president Rahul Gandhis rally at the Police Ground here. Ashok Tanwar,AICC member and in charge of partys affairs in Rajasthan,made the announcement in this regard at the rally. He introduced 31-year-old Poonia to Gandhi,Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot,Union minister Sis Ram Ola and AICC general secretary Gurudas Kamat.
