Organisation of Islamic Conference meet mentions Kashmir at Pak insistence

She urged the panel to express solidarity with Kashmiris

At Pakistan’s insistence,a reference to the Kashmir issue was included in the declaration adopted at a meeting of an Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) panel in Abu Dhabi.

The 11-point draft declaration of the meeting of the Parliamentary Union of Islamic Countries,a panel of the OIC,had no mention of the Kashmir issue thought it dealt with the Palestinian problem,inter-faith dialogue, rights of minorities in Islamic countries and the unrest in Tunisia.

On the intervention of Fehmida Mirza, the speaker of the lower house of Pakistan’s Parliament, the meet agreed to include the Kashmir issue in its final declaration, the official APP news agency reported.

Mirza, who led the Pakistani parliamentary delegation to the meet, said that though Pakistan fully supported the outcome of the conference,it “pained her heart” that representatives had ignored the plight of Kashmiris.

She urged the panel to express solidarity with Kashmiris.

The final declaration expressed “strong support for the resolution of the longstanding Kashmir dispute in accordance with UN resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people.”
