A Chinese teenager has reportedly sold one of his kidneys for 20,000 yuan to buy an iPad 2 tablet computer.
I wanted to buy an iPad 2 but could not afford it, said 17-year-old Zheng in Huai Shan City.
A broker contacted me on the Internet and said he could help me sell one kidney for 20,000 yuan, the boy was quoted as saying by the state-run Global Times.
On April 28,Zheng went to Chenzhou City in the neighbouring Hunan Province for kidney removal surgery,arranged by the broker.
His parents knew nothing about it,Zheng said.
He was paid 22,000 yuan (USD 3400) after his right kidney was taken out at the Chenzhou Hospital.
When he returned home,his mother came to know about the surgery and reported to the police immediately. But,they could not locate the broker whose cell phone was always switched off,the report said.
Later,it also turned out that the Chenzhou Hospital was not qualified to perform organ transplant.
The hospital claimed they had no idea about Zhengs surgery because the department that did the surgery had been contracted to a Fujian businessman.
However,Zheng is now regretting as his health deteriorated after the loss of the kidney.
The case is still under investigation,the report added.
