NEW DELHI, September 18: The strike by lawyers at the Patiala House courts has been called off after Delhi Police Commissioner V N Singh reportedly assured them of an investigation into yesterday’s fracas.

There had been complete chaos in the court on Thursday afternoon after lawyers and the police personnel present there came to blows over the alleged manhandling of the Vasant Kunj police station ACP by four men, including a lawyer, on Wednesday evening.

This resulted in all court work being suspended for the day, and a call for strike the following day by the New Delhi Bar Association. The four men allegedly involved in the incident — Vision Education Society secretary S.A.S. Kiramani, Vision School of Management director S.K. Acharya and executive director I.P. Singh and advocate Suhail Ahmed Siddiqui — maintained that the ACP had them thrashed before locking them up.

Yesterday’s trouble began when lawyers attacked the policemen who were bringing the four accused to court — sub-inspector Lokendra Kumar, head constable Vir Singh, constable Pankaj and another constable.
