BMC will cancel licences of 500 agents at the four octroi nakas and forfeit their deposit. Mayor Nandu Satam announced the decision following a strike by the agents on Monday, adding advertisements for new agents will be released in a day or two.
The agents were protesting BMC’s decision to charge 10 times the octroi duty for evaders who will be prosecuted if they fail to pay up. The decision was taken a month and a half ago by Mayor-in-Council. Earlier, agents were charged between five to 10 per cent of duty as penalty.
