The National Human Rights Commission has issued a notice to the Ministry of Home Affairs calling for a report on the plight of Shehnaz, a Pakistani woman raped in police custody in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch District Jail.

Ranjan Lakhanpal, Chairman, World Human Rights Protection Council, had sought NHRC intervention on the basis of an Indian Express report on the plight of Shehnaz and her six-year-old daughter, born after the rape.

Shehnaz has been allowed to return, but Pakistani Rangers have refused to accept her daughter as an Indian had fathered her.
