With the past week registering a sudden upswing in the activities of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) that contradicted Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s claim that the situation had ‘‘remarkably improved’’, security forces have reportedly launched a fresh offensive against the militants.

The ULFA, since Tuesday last week, has triggered at least 30 explosions across the state, killing three persons, including a police officer, and injuring over 50. Four militants have also lost their lives in encounters during the week.
