In a move to put the state’s power sector on the fast track, Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda has engaged the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation Ltd (CESC) to set up a 1,000 MW capacity thermal power plant at an estimated investment of Rs 4,000 crore.

The MoU was signed between the Jharkhand government and CESC in the presence of CESC Vice-Chairman Sanjiv Goenka and Munda here on Thursday. If the project fructifies, it may help Jharkhand meet its ever increasing power requirement. This is the first major private investment in the state’s power sector.

The Munda government has promised to provide land to CESC at three alternative sites in Godda, Latehar and West Singhbhum. ‘‘CESC will carry out necessary pre-feasibility studies within six months to decide on one of the sites,’’ states a communique.
