Maulana As’ad Madani, president of the Jamiat Ulema-I-Hind, died here today in a hospital where he was admitted for the past three months following head injury in a fall. He was 78. Madani had been in coma for the past three days. He was also suffering from diabetes and heart disease, party sources said. He was admitted to Apollo Hospital in November last year.
A post-graduate in Islamic Theology in 1945, Madani began his public career as vice-president of JUH Deoband. He was elected president of the party on August 11, 1973. Madani has been known for his commitment to the legacy of the one-nation theory that he inherited from his father Maulana Hussain Ahmed Madani. He had been involved in anti-terrorism campaigns for the past three years.
In his condolence message, PM Manmohan Singh said Madani was a ‘‘revered’’ religious leader. ‘‘I join millions of our countrymen in condoling the death of Maulana Madani, who was a freedom fighter.’’
