Amar Ujala
Yashwant Sinha writes in Amar Ujala that the price rise isn’t a new phenomenon but has been playing out for the last four years. The Prime Minister and the Finance Minister have, on various occasions, talked of a possible price rise. “Therefore, the government’s claim that international circumstances were behind the price rise is wrong,” the former finance minister says. The Government should have lowered the import duty when the food grains were available at a lower rate in the international market. “Now is the time to give as much subsidy on food grain import, as possible.”
Lokmat
Marathi daily Lokmat in an editorial dated April 12 welcomed the Maharashtra Government’s initiative to make essential items—rice, tur dal and palm oil—available at cheaper rates through fair price shops. The rising inflation has led to nationwide protests and the state government initiative will help tackle it.
Hindustan
An editorial in Hindustan says Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s statement that “there is no need to revert to the age of blind justice to check inflation” is based on his past experiences as a finance minister. “He had then succeeded in checking inflation not by imposing sanctions but by lifting some of them. The thinking behind this practice was that inflation could be checked only through economic policies, not by economic laws.”
Rashtriya Sahara
Rashtriya Sahara says inflation has gripped the whole world because in the era of globalisation, no country can function in isolation. “Does it mean that there is no way to check it?” asks its editorial while ridiculing the Congress and the UPA government for their contradictory statements. “Congress spokespersons are claiming the government has taken measures and its impact would soon be visible. On the other hand, the government is saying that it does not have any magic wand to check inflation.”
Sakal
Marathi daily Sakaal says the rising inflation should not be made a political issue and instead, joint efforts should be made by all political parties to handle it. Inflation has not only affected the common citizens, but is worrisome for the UPA Government.
