DIBRUGARH, MAY 9: Five ULFA hardcores, including a self-styled `captain’ and area commander have been killed in an encounter with an Army patrol party in upper Assam’s Tinsukia district, official sources said on Tuesday.

Following the incident, which took place on Monday, security has been tightened along the Indo-Myanmar border, they said.

The encounter took place at Philobari when the militants of the banned outfit lead by `captain’ Pradip Gogoi and `second in command of 28 ULFA battalion action group,’ showered bullets on the Army patrol party. It led to a fierce exchange of fire in which five rebels were killed on the spot, they said.

Besides Gogoi, the four other killed were `lieutenant’ Prabin Gohain, `lieutenant’ Anjan Dihingia, `sergeant’ Abhijan Doley and `sepoy’ Lakhi Moran.

The dead were identified by Gogoi’s wife, who was taken to custody along with the owner of the house in which the ultras were hiding, the sources said.

Two AK 47 rifles, one AK 56 rifle, two high powered hand grenades and documents were recovered from the ultras, they added.
