• Pamela Philipose’s column, ‘‘Where’s a decent place to stash away the loot’’, was thought provoking. Corruption in the bureaucracy is an age-old practice that has assumed alarming dimensions. Akhand Pratap Singh’s vested interest in increasing his personal finances is a case in point. However, it would be wrong to put the entire blame on him. The real issue is the lacunae in our system that allows such corruption. There are very few bureaucrats who go by the book. The saying about a few rotten apples spoiling the entire basket no longer applies. It is now a case of the basket spoiling the few good ones left. And our snail-paced judicial process helps these culprits go free.

• With reference to Coomi Kapoor’s column, ‘‘Inside Track’’, the meeting between Bilal Musharraf and Rahul Gandhi should be welcomed as a step in the right direction. It is good news if young and innovative minds like theirs take an active part in the administrative and diplomatic affairs of their respective countries.
