The sound of bagpipes rent the air as Kolkata’s swish set — captains of industry, senior bureaucrats, expats and Army officers — teed off at the Kolkata’s inaugural Express Power Golf 2005 tournament. The tournament was doubly special as it marked the launch of the Kolkata edition of The Indian Express.

The high turnout at EPG 2005 — sponsored by Indian Airlines, Famous Grouse, Austrian Air and Kingfisher — was all the more remarkable given the happenings across the city at Eden Gardens.

The participants included R.K. Tripathy, Principal Secretary, Forest Department, Maj-Gen R.K. Singh, Wanna Pergmark, Consul-general of Thailand, Satish K. Dhall, executive director (plantations), Hindusthan Lever, Jaydeep Chitlangia of Madhya Bharat Papers, Sudeep Chitlangia of Sarda Plywood and Vikram Jaiswal, Executive director, Hotel Hindustan International. Also on hand was Anup Singh, Director, ITC and president of the Indian Chamber of Commerce. Singh is an old ITC hand; he says he’s been with the company ever since he can remember ‘‘I was picked up by ITC while still at IIT Kharagpur and have been with them ever since.’’
