The CPI (M) today admitted that a number of its supporters were involved in the attack on Union Minister and senior BJP leader Tapan Sikdar as Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya expressed regret over the incident.
The Chief Minister, who expressed regret to Sikdar over the telephone, directed police to arrest the attackers. ‘‘I talked to Sikdar over the phone and expressed personal regret for the incident,’’ Bhattacharya said in a statement. Condemning the assault, CPI (M) Politburo member Anil Biswas said some party supporters were involved but it was yet to be established if they had taken part. Those guilty would be punished, he added.
