Central defenders Robert Huth and John Terry headed a goal in each half as Chelsea beat Birmingham City 2-0 to reach the FA Cup fifth round on Sunday.

Chelsea, playing after Bolton Wanderers beat third division Oldham Athletic 1-0 to go into Monday’s draw, showed the form and finishing that has taken them 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Huth put them ahead after six minutes when the German defender nodded in a Damien Duff corner and Terry sealed victory in the 80th minute, heading home a superb long ball from substitute midfielder Frank Lampard.

The strike by Terry, whose brother Paul scored for Yeovil in their 3-2 Cup defeat at Charlton Athletic on Saturday, enabled Jose Mourinho to play with only 10 men — by taking off the injured Huth.

Bolton edge Oldham to reach the fifth round

“It was a professional performance from ourselves and a fantastic effort by Oldham,” Bolton boss Sam Allardyce said. “It was a typical Cup tie at this level.”

The win was marred, though, by an injury to Bolton defender Nicky Hunt, who was carried off on a stretcher and then taken to hospital to assess the damage after a lunging tackle by Oldham striker Lee Croft.

Bolton’s winner was a soft goal, with Ricardo Gardner crossing from the left, teenager Vaz Te beating his marker to the header and Oldham’s Australian keeper Les Pogliacomi parrying but failing to keep the ball out.
