• With more than 50,000 dead in Sunday’s tsunami and many unaccounted for, it seemed increasingly clear on Tuesday that at least a third of the dead were children, according to estimates by aid officials. The dead included a high number of children, officials suggested, because they were least able to grab onto trees or boats when the deadly waves smashed through villages and over beaches.

• Tulasi’s parents thought they had lost the baby when tsunami swept her away at a Malaysian beach. But they soon found that the mattress was floating in water and the baby crying on it.
• A 14-month-old Swedish toddler who was feared orphaned was reunited with his relatives on. Hannes was found wrapped in blankets on a hill by an American couple on Sunday, hours after a Thai villager had rescued him. “We thought his whole family was washed out,” American Ron Rubin told Reuters as Hannes played in a Phuket hospital room with his uncle and grandmother. — Agencies
