Durga Ashtami 2025 Date, Time, Puja Vidhi, Muhurat: The eighth day of the Navratri festival and the second day of Durga Puja is known as Maha Ashtami or Maha Durga Ashtami—one of the most auspicious days.
It falls on the bright lunar fortnight Ashtami tithi of the Hindu month of Ashvina, which corresponds to late September and early October according to the Hindu calendar.
This year, Durga Ashtami will be marked on September 30, 2025, falling on a Tuesday; the Ashtami Tithi will start from September 29, 2025, at 04:31 PM and culminate on September 30, 2025, at 06:06 PM, according to drikpanchang.com.
According to the calendar, the first auspicious time for Kanya Pujan on Ashtami is from 5:00 AM to 6:12 AM. The second auspicious time is from 10:40 AM to 12:10 PM.
Durga Ashtami begins with Mahasnan and Shodashopachar Puja, and on the day, nine small pots are installed, evoking nine Durga Shaktis.
According to current traditions, young unmarried girls are revered as Goddess Durga and adored on Maha Ashtami.
They are revered as part of the Kumari Puja, which is performed in several areas over the nine days of Durga Navratri; however, if performed a single day during Durga Puja, then it is preferable to do it on Maha Ashtami.
On this day, a strict diet is maintained by devotees all across the globe; some even observe a fast, and in the evening of Maha Ashtami, Sandhi Puja is done.
This also marks the end of the Asthami tithi and the start of Navami. In fact, it is generally believed that the last 24 minutes of Ashtami and the first 24 minutes of Navami are extremely auspicious.
During this time, animals are sacrificed, and for those who don’t, they perform the bali with various fruits and vegetables.
On this day, delectable bhogs are prepared. Khichdi, with mixed vegetables, papad, tomato chutney, payesh and roshogolla are some of the delicacies that are generally found at Durga Puja bhogs and are feasted upon by devotees. This is carried on for Asthami, Navami and Dashami.
