Emma Dumont, known for their role in Oppenheimer, recently made a personal announcement on social media, coming out as transmasculine non-binary. As part of their journey, Dumont revealed they will now be using the name Nick Dumont.
The update was shared on Instagram, where Dumont changed their pronouns to “they/them” and confirmed that they would now be addressed as Nick rather than Emma.
Starting their career as a child star, Dumont has appeared in films such as Wrong Turn, The Body Tree, and Nobody Walks, among others.
Psychologist Ashutosh Tiwari, an expert on gender identity, said, “Transmasculine non-binary people identify as partially male and outside the gender assigned at birth, or somewhere in between. They often present manly features but do not fully adhere to the male gender identity.”It’s important to understand that gender identity and assigned sex are separate entities. For non-binary individuals, these can be mismatched, often resulting in gender dysphoria and emotional distress. While transmasculine non-binary people often present “manly” features, “respecting their complex, personal identities and lived experiences are crucial,” according to Tiwari. This is because most individuals experience this social, personal, medical, and psychological transition in highly unique, individual ways.
Unfortunately, non-binary individuals frequently face stigmatisation and discrimination. Tiwari pointed out that “such experiences may have negative effects on mental health and increase the prevalence of suicidal thoughts and tendencies, depression and anxiety.”
