A good ol’ champi is what you need for ‘healthy hair and scalp’

You must remember that the most important part of your scalp is at the top as this is where all your stress, tension, and gas are stored

Skin is the largest organ of our body and, thus, requires special attention. But, when talking about the skin, most people end up focusing only on their faces, hands, and legs, completely forgetting their scalp. “When we lose weight and compromise our health, our skin also becomes dull, dry, and flaky. So many people end up making peace with the fact that they are going to have bad skin and hair just because they have PCOD, thyroid, are menopausing, are PMSing, or have fat,” Rujuta Diwekar, a nutritionist, said, adding that “it need not be like this”.

She went on to add that one of the ways we can lose weight is by unwinding and relaxing. “And, there is nothing more relaxing than a champi. The scalp is also a part of our skin from which our hair grows. A lot of us are suffering from hair loss, greying of hair, and even premature alopecia,” she said.

Diwekar said that our grandmothers had a perfect solution for these problems — a good ol’ champi, as she went on to share a DIY massage oil that can be prepared in a jiffy.

*Heat coconut oil in an iron kadhai.
*When hot, add curry leaves.
*Remove the pan from the gas.
*Add methi seeds or hemp seeds to the oil.
*Now, add aliv seeds and a hibiscus flower.
*Let this oil cool down overnight.
*Next day, filter this oil and massage on your scalp.

How to massage?

Diwekar said that the most important part of your scalp is the top as this is where all your stress, tension, and gas are stored.

*Take some oil on the base of your palm and simply rub it on the top of your scalp. Move your palm in a front and back manner. “This helps with gas, acidity and bloating,” she said.
*Next, tap your palm 4-5 times on top of your scalp.
*Take a little bit of oil on your fingertips and put your thumbs right behind your ears.
*Rotate your fingers from the base of your scalp and work your way up to the top of your scalp.
*Take a little more oil and apply it on the base of your scalp as it is a little harder.
*Now, lock your thumbs in front of your ears and massage your fingers from the front to the back of your scalp.
*Once done, take your index fingers from the front of your ears to the back of your ears.
*Use your fingers and massage your neck from the back to the front.
*To finish off your massage, take some oil and massage it under your neck and on top of your chest. Massage your fingers toward the shoulders and end them on your armpits.

She suggested doing this massage once a week. “Next time, throw a champi party with your friends, looks cooler than a champagne party and saves you from over-styling your hair,” Diwekar said.

Talking about this DIY oil, Dr Kotla Sai Krishna, Consultant Dermatologist, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, said, “The components indicated in this video are an age-old remedy offered for generations in many homes across the country. Since these components are natural, they may have no negative effects and may work effectively for some people. Nevertheless, there is no scientific evidence or data to support these age-old remedies’ exact mechanism of action and their role in dealing with specific hair loss patterns or conditions. As a result, while these may be effective for general hair loss, they may not be effective for specific conditions.”

She also shared how these substances can help minimise overall hair loss:

*Coconut Oil – Researchers speculated that this was because coconut oil has a triglyceride of lauric acid, which increases its affinity for hair proteins and allows it to go deeper into the hair shaft than other regularly used oils
*Curry Leaves – They are good for your hair since they are high in beta-carotene and protein, both of which help to prevent hair loss and thinning.
*Methi Seeds – Fenugreek seeds are high in iron and protein, which are both necessary for hair development. They also have a distinct makeup of plant chemicals, such as flavonoids and saponins. Due to their anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties, these chemicals are thought to stimulate hair growth.
*Hibiscus Flower – Hibiscus flowers and leaves contain flavonoids and amino acids, which nourish the scalp and hair roots. Flavonoids enhance blood circulation to your hair follicles, which strengthens the hair from the root. Hair fall and thinning can be avoided by strengthening your hair roots.
*Aliv Seeds – Aliv seeds are high in calcium, minerals, iron, dietary fibre, and vitamins A, C, and E, all of which can aid in hair development.

“Scalp massages help blood circulation and that, in turn, promotes hair growth,” Dr Krishna said.
