Priyanka Chopra, who recently made her debut on The Howard Stern Show, opened up about how a nasal polyps surgery, which went wrong, almost threatened her career in Bollywood and left her in “deep, deep depression“.

“It was a dark phase,” she told Howard, explaining that it all began after doctors recommended she get a polyp in her nasal cavity removed. “The surgeons made mistakes during the procedure. This thing happens, and my face looks completely different, and I went into a deep, deep depression,” she continued. Following the same, Priyanka Chopra shared that she was fired from three different movies, and she truly believed her acting career “was over before it started”.

But what are nasal polyps? Let’s find out from experts.

According to MayoClinic. org, nasal polyps are soft, painless, noncancerous growths on the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses. They hang down like teardrops or grapes and are often a result of chronic inflammation. They are also associated with asthma, recurring infection, allergies, drug sensitivity, or certain immune disorders, it reads.

While small nasal polyps may not cause symptoms, larger growths or groups of nasal polyps can block one’s nasal passages or lead to breathing problems, a loss of sense of smell, and frequent infections, MayoClinic.org noted. Adding that nasal polyps can affect anyone, the site added: “While medications can often shrink or eliminate nasal polyps, surgery is sometimes needed to remove them.”

Concurred Dr Jaini Lodha Bhandari, senior consultant ENT, Nanavati Max Superspeciality Hospital, Mumbai, and said that such “benign inflammatory swellings cause symptoms such as nasal stuffiness or blockage, discharge, facial pain, and headache. “One should seek timely consultation with an ENT specialist if experiencing any of these symptoms,” Dr Lodha Bhandari told indianexpress.com.

Dr Lodha Bhandari further noted that anti-allergic tablets/nasal sprays/antibiotics are usually given as treatment options. “Surgery is only recommended when there is no response to medical management,” she added.

Dr Vijay Rangachari, consultant – ENT Surgeon, Manipal Hospital, Whitefield, Bangalore said that a nasal polyp surgery helps remove blockage from the nasal cavity. “This is a common problem, often caused due to sinusitis and nose blockage and the surgery is called Endoscopic Sinus surgery. Often, it is associated with deviation of the nasal septum, which is also corrected using an endoscopic camera through the nose,” said Dr Rangachari.

According to Dr Rangachari, the supporting roof area of the nose can get infected after surgery and lead to drooping of the bridge of the nose — which may cause a saddle nose deformity, where the nose looks like a horse’s saddle. “This can lead to disfigurement of the nose and face. It requires rhinoplasty and correction of the defective area in the nose using cartilage or extra bone,” Dr Rangachari said.
