Hormones are chemicals that coordinate different functions in your body by carrying messages through your blood to your organs, skin, muscles and other tissues. Scientists have identified over 50 hormones in the human body till now. They help to regulate metabolism, blood sugar, growth, blood pressure, reproductive cycles and sexual function, mood and stress levels.

Any imbalance in hormones happens when you have too much or too little of one or more hormones. Dr Arpana Jain, Director, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh said, “There are many different hormones in the body and an imbalance in any of them can cause a wide range of symptoms. For example, an imbalance in estrogen and progesterone can cause irregular periods, mood swings and hot flashes. An imbalance in thyroid hormones can cause fatigue, weight gain and depression.”

Highlighting the same, Bhagyashree Dassani, actor and nutritionist, took to Instagram to share the importance of hormonal balance.

The 54-year-old, who is known to promote a healthy lifestyle and share tips on fitness, nutrition and overall wellness on social media said, “In everyday life, we think about it, we feel it, and also tolerate difficulties, but we don’t understand who we should talk to and what should we ask. And this is about hormonal imbalance.”

She also mentioned that hormones are needed to regulate metabolic activity in our body. “A problem in endocrine glands like the pituitary, thyroid, ovary, adrenal or pancreas can disrupt the hormonal balance.”

Such imbalance can cause:

*Unexplained and sometimes sudden weight loss or weight gain
*Fatigue, muscle weakness and painful joints
*Abnormal heart rate
*Depression or anxiety
*Hair loss

“If you have any of these symptoms which surface either suddenly or are seemingly prolonged even after an adequate rest period…you should consult your endocrinologist without delay. Correct lifestyle chances or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can help tide over these situations,” she continued.

Adding to this, Dr Jain noted, “Hormone therapy involves taking medications that contain hormones, such as estrogen or progesterone, to help balance hormone levels. This type of therapy is commonly used to treat menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. Medications such as birth control pills or anti-androgen drugs can also be used to manage hormonal imbalances in women with conditions such as PCOS.”

In addition to medication and hormone therapy, lifestyle changes such as regular exercise and a balanced diet can help to regulate hormone levels and manage symptoms. These include:

*Eating a diet that is high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein can help to support overall health and balance hormone levels

*Reducing or eliminating caffeine, alcohol, avoiding processed foods and sugar can also be helpful

*Stress management techniques such as meditation, yoga and deep breathing exercises can help to reduce cortisol levels and promote relaxation, which can help to regulate hormone levels and manage symptoms

*Maintaining a healthy weight through regular exercise and a balanced diet is also important for managing hormonal imbalances. Excess body fat can increase insulin resistance and disrupt hormone levels, so losing weight can help to improve insulin sensitivity and balance hormones.

Concluding, Dr Jain said, “It is important to work closely with a healthcare provider to develop a comprehensive treatment plan for hormonal imbalances.”
