The horrors of horror, you’re developing laugh lines. But how can you when you’re barely in your late twenties? Well, these foods might be to blame.

Dr Somnath Gupta, Consultant Physician & Diabetologist, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad, said the ageing of your skin can be influenced by two main factors — genetic and environmental factors.

“Environmental factors include diet, sleep, stress, and activity. While there’s no single food that directly causes skin ageing, certain dietary choices can contribute to premature ageing due to their impact on your overall health and skin,” he explained.

According to Dr Kritu Bhandari, M.D. in Dermatology & Cosmetology, Founder of Orijine Clinic, there are some reasons why certain foods can contribute to the ageing of skin or fasten it.

*Inflammatory foods: Foods high in sugars, unhealthy fats, and processed carbs can cause body inflammation. This inflammation can speed up skin ageing, resulting in wrinkles and less elastic skin.

*Free radicals: Some foods, when cooked at high heat or exposed to air for a long time, create harmful molecules called free radicals. These can harm your skin cells and collagen, making you look older faster.

*Sun sensitivity: Certain foods, like celery and citrus fruits, contain compounds called psoralens that can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. This can increase the risk of sunburn and skin damage.

5 foods that can age your skin faster

Dr Gupta and Dr Bhandari are in agreement that these foods can age your skin faster.

High sugar foods

Consuming excessive sugar can lead to a process called glycation, where sugar molecules bind to collagen and elastin fibres in your skin, making them stiff and less flexible. This can result in wrinkles and sagging skin, explained Dr Gupta.

Processed and fried foods

These foods often contain unhealthy fats and high levels of sodium, which can lead to inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation can accelerate skin ageing by breaking down collagen and elastin.

Processed meats like bacon and sausages contain advanced glycation end products (AGEs), according to Dr Bhandari, adding that these AGEs can accelerate skin ageing by damaging collagen and elastin.

Alcohol

Excessive alcohol consumption can dehydrate your skin, leading to dryness and fine lines. “It can also dilate blood vessels, causing redness and a flushed appearance, which can become permanent over time,” said Dr Gupta.

Saturated and trans fats

Foods rich in these unhealthy fats can promote inflammation and damage the skin’s natural barrier, making it more susceptible to environmental factors like UV radiation. “Trans fats found in fried and processed foods can trigger inflammation and hence release oxidative stress,” said Dr Bhandari.

Caffeine

While moderate caffeine consumption is generally safe, excessive intake can lead to dehydration, which can result in dull, dry, and aged-looking skin, according to Dr Gupta.
