Parineeti Chopra, who is expecting her first child with husband and politician Raghav Chadha, is having the time of her life and enjoying good food. Sharing a glimpse of the same, she took to her Instagram Stories to post a photo of her dinner. “Sometimes dinner has to be tomato soup and cheese toast, and no one can stop me,” the Chamkila actor captioned.

Taking a cue from her dinner update, let’s understand whether the combination is advisable for mothers-to-be.

Consultant dietitian Garima Goyal said tomato soup with cheese toast can be a comforting and filling dinner option during pregnancy, but whether it is advisable depends on balance and moderation. “Tomato soup provides hydration, vitamin C, and antioxidants like lycopene, which support immunity and skin health. The cheese on toast adds protein and calcium, both crucial for fetal bone and muscle development,” said Goyal.

However, there are some considerations.

Goyal mentioned that processed cheese is high in sodium and saturated fat, so portion control matters.

“Excess sodium can contribute to bloating and high blood pressure in pregnancy. If the soup is cream-based or very salty, that also adds to the load. Opting for a homemade tomato soup with minimal salt and adding fresh herbs instead of heavy cream makes it much healthier,” said Goyal.

Whole-grain bread, in place of white bread for toast, can also improve the fibre content and aid digestion.

It is a safe and enjoyable meal if kept occasional, balanced with fresh vegetables, fruits, and protein throughout the rest of the day.

It is recommended to speak with the concerned gynaecologist and a dietitian for a smooth pregnancy and postpartum diet. “They can offer specific guidance depending on the person’s health, medical background, and nutritional requirements, ensuring that any dietary adjustments are secure and help in the healing process post-childbirth,” said Goyal.

What should an ideal, balanced meal look like?

To put it simply, an ideal balanced meal during pregnancy should bring together all the key nutrients that support both the mother and the growing baby. “Each meal should have a source of protein such as dal, paneer, curd, eggs, or lean meat for growth and repair, complex carbohydrates like roti, rice, or millets for steady energy, and at least two kinds of vegetables for vitamins, minerals, and fibre,” said Goyal.

Adding a small portion of healthy fats from nuts, seeds, or ghee helps with nutrient absorption and hormone balance. “Fruits add hydration and antioxidants, making the plate complete,” said Goyal.

This kind of variety ensures that meals are not only filling but also cover the wide range of nutrients needed in pregnancy, while preventing common concerns like fatigue, constipation, or nutritional deficiencies.
