A work-life imbalance often takes a toll on health — both mental and physical. However, by taking some time out, planning, and implementing certain fundamental lifestyle changes, as Dr Sudhir Kumar — who once weighed 100 kg — suggests, one can achieve better health.

The Hyderabad-based neurologist’s tips to lose 30 kg with a disciplined lifestyle have once again caught the netizens’ eye. The viral post from 2023 focuses on his fitness journey, which started in 2020 with simple lifestyle changes like jogging, eating the right amount of food, and increasing sleep duration.

Sharing tips on X, Dr Kumar shared, “Fitness journey started on November 6, 2020. Initially, I walked 5 km, gradually increased to 10 km over 4-6 weeks, then slowly jogged and finally started running. Focused on distance and time on feet and not pace. Also wanted to keep HR low and feel comfortable.”

How do simple lifestyle changes help reduce weight?

According to Dr Anjana Kalia, Ayurvedic Doctor & Nutritionist at Bloom Clinix, Delhi, weight management is not always about drastic diets or intense exercise. She said that simple lifestyle changes can create long-term results.

“For example, walking more during the day, using stairs instead of lifts, drinking enough water, and eating home-cooked meals regularly can all make a big difference. These small, consistent choices help balance calories, improve metabolism, and prevent overeating. Over time, they build healthy habits that are easier to sustain than strict regimens,” Dr Kalia told indianexpress.com.

How crucial is sleeping for a healthy lifestyle, as the neurologist in the viral video pointed out?

Dr Kalia reiterated that sleep plays a significant role in regulating hormones that control hunger and fullness.

“When you don’t get enough sleep, your body produces more ghrelin, the hormone that makes you hungry, and less leptin, the one that tells you you are full. This imbalance can lead to endless cravings and overeating. Having a good night’s rest helps your body restore that balance, giving you more energy and self-control,” she added.

The doctor further emphasised that diet is an additional factor in shedding those extra kilos. Besides skipping sugary drinks and snacks, she recommended focusing on eating right. “Adding fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats is highly nourishing for the body,” she said.

But how does one know what the right diet is?

One highly recommended way to eat right is “time-restricted” eating, a trend that has sat well with the working class.

Dr. Kalia described it as giving your body a break. “By limiting your food to a specific window, you give your body a chance to burn stored fat instead of constantly processing new food,” she explained.

As we adopt a healthy eating habit, our insulin levels are automatically regulated. Result? The urge for late-night snacking, one of the prime contributors to weight gain, takes a pause.

“It’s a simple way to regulate your insulin levels and curb late-night snacking, which is a major contributor to weight gain,” she concluded.
