Princess Diana’s timeless fashion sense continues to captivate the world, remaining an enduring symbol of style and grace. Her influence on modern trends is undeniable with her iconic outfits frequently referenced and recreated. Now, one such legendary outfit she wore to a movie premiere in 1991 is up for auction, giving fashion enthusiasts the opportunity to own a piece of her iconic legacy.
It is a stunning scarlet red silk gown by Bruce Oldfield featuring a draped short-sleeve bodice and ruching to the waist and hips with a lame tartan motif. The Princess wore this dress while attending the film premiere of Hot Shots! at the Odean Leicester in November 1991 with President Arpad Goncz of Hungry and his wife Szusza.
While attending the movie premiere in the look, Diana paired it with a red clutch purse and pearl jewels.
Julien’s Auctions and Turner Classic Movies recently announced that this iconic gown will be part of the ‘Legends: Hollywood & Royalty’ auction, scheduled to take place online and in Beverly Hills, California, from September 6 to 8.
“Princess Diana and her fashions always had an audience, the whole world, who was mesmerised by her and her gowns, especially by this custom Bruce Oldfield design. Oldfield’s design is light as well as tailored with its loose hand-gathered bust, sloped ruched shoulders, and fitted ruched bodice from under the bust to below the hips. The horizontal folds fan out from the centre seam and extend to the back closure. The bodice hugs past the hips going into an open skirt; the hem floats delicately to the floor. A label that reads “Bruce Oldfield, Custom Made, London” is present,” it shared.
The auction house stated that the upcoming occasion is “in honour of the 100th anniversary of Warner Bros,” with “costumes, props, behind-the-scenes production material, photographs, memorabilia, artefacts” and more from “legendary films produced by the storied Hollywood studio” being offered to the public.” The collection includes more than 1,400 items associated with Hollywood legends, including Audrey Hepburn, Judy Garland, and Elizabeth Taylor.
The red Oldfield gown isn’t the only piece previously owned by Diana that is going up for auction. Alongside it, a slender-fitting white silk crepe gown with bold bands of black silk velvet, designed by Catherine Walker and worn by the Princess of Wales to a private function, is also up for grabs.
Additionally, a Catherine Walker evening gown worn by Princess Diana to a gala dinner at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Canada in 1986 will also be auctioned. It is a head-turning, off-the-shoulder black faille bodice with a décolleté neckline with a draped jade silk skirt with a fringed sash and side slit.
