A round of ‘a-paws’, if you will, for this designer at the New York Fashion Week, who put pets front and centre, preening with red carpet treatment while humans were the accessories left to be flaunted.
While the human models for Anthony Rubio’s Spring/Summer 2024 Canine Couture womenswear line at The Angel Orensanz Foundation were stunning, the dogs and one cat accompanying them were the ones who stole the show.
Rubio, who was born in New York City, lives in a world in which “the humans are the accessories,” as was demonstrated in his 17th season NYFW show. His first runway show was inspired by that sentiment, and the New York designer has since produced more “canine couture”, earning him the title of Master Pet Couturier, according to Timeout.
Rubio drew inspiration from historic ball gowns and formalwear from the 1950s by Christian Dior for his New York Fashion Week show this year. The designer pulled from various sources to create the looks for the humans in the show, taking inspiration from sculptures, embroidered flowers, brilliantly coloured costumes, and rock and roll’s bad boys.
The canine models came from a variety of backgrounds, including shelters, rescue organisations, and online celebrities. “The dogs love the attention and love to impress. Anthony designs with comfort and safety in mind. The dogs love his creations,” Rubio’s agent told The New York Post.
The animals on the runway sported a range of stylish ensembles, including hats, glasses, coats and capes with elaborate embroidery, tulle, and sparkles. Some of the dogs even donned clothing that matched the colours of the men and women who were with them on the runway.
“Anthony says the easiest models to work with are the dogs because they never fuss or complain. Everyone loves Anthony’s artistry, and the world is enjoying Anthony Rubio Canine Couture,” his agent added.
The trained canines entered the runway like seasoned pros, some being led by their human companions while others were being carried. The audience erupted in grins and “awws” as one small dog on a leash gave a small body shake as he walked away, much to the amusement of the observers, the outlet noted.
Rubio exited the stage with his stylish pooch and performed a cheeky celebratory dance as the festivities came to a conclusion.
