West Bengal Panchayat polls: Governor vows strict action against trouble makers, heads to Bhangar on counting day

Days after at least 20 people were killed in the violence-marred West Bengal Panchayat elections, Governor CV Ananda Bose reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring a secure future for Bengal and pledged to take strict measures against troublemakers, including the “remote control goons” operating in the field.

Governor Bose returned to Kolkata from Delhi on Tuesday after submitting a report to Union Minister Amit Shah on the poll violence, sources said.

The Governor told reporters at the airport, “There will be a relentless fight against the growing violence in Bengal. Trouble makers will be severely punished for breaking the law.”

” Those who commit violence in the field will be made to curse the day they are born. All authorities will come down with a heavy hand on the goons and lawbreakers…,” Governor Bose added.

Immediately after arriving at the airport, Governor Bose headed directly to Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district to oversee the vote counting process.

“Strict action will be taken against those who sit in the political control room and incite violence by remote controlling goons on the field,” he said.

Repolling was held in close to 697 booths on Monday due to the violence on June 8. Earlier, on the day of polling, Governor Bose various places, particularly in North 24 Parganas district, to assess the situation in areas like Bhangar and Barasat, which witnessed massive violence. He also established a ‘peace home’ at Raj Bhavan to address the concerns of the common people.
