After 14 people were killed in the collision of two passenger trains in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram district on Sunday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge hit out at the Modi government alleging that “all claims of safety by the Union government, post the Balasore train tragedy have evaporated in thin air”.
The Visakhapatnam-Rayagada Passenger Special train hit the Visakhapatnam-Palasa Passenger Express from the rear after missing red signal on the Howrah-Chennai line, leading to the derailment of multiple coaches, according to official sources. The collision took place between Kantakapalle and Alamanda railway stations.
According to news agency ANI, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy is scheduled to reach the accident site today. According to Biswajit Sahu, the CPRO, East Coast Railway, the rescue operations that was underway overnight is now complete. While the track restoration work is underway, the CPRO, while speaking to the news agency, also said that buses and trains have been arranged for the stranded passengers. “We have arranged buses and trains for the stranded passengers… We are trying to clear the track by 4 pm today…”
The East Coast Railway General Manager Shri Manoj Sharma is monitoring restoration work at the accident site along with Principal Heads of Departments of ECoR and Divisional Railway Manager Waltair.
About 8 poclain machines, one 140-ton Crain (Rail Crain) and 800-900 people are engaged in the restoration works. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are also likely to reach the accident site to help in the rescue operation.
According to CPRO, East Coast Railway, buses and trains have been arranged for the stranded passengers. "A total of 18 trains have been cancelled and 22 trains have been diverted. We are trying to clear the track by 4 pm today...," the CPRO told news agency ANI.
The CPRO, East Coast Railway, said that a total of 33 trains were cancelled, 22 others were diverted and 11 trains were partially cancelled.
The workers are trying to clear the track by 4 pm, Monday, the CPRO said.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge hit out at the Modi government over train derailment, and said that "all claims of safety by the Union government, post the Balasore train tragedy have evaporated in thin air".
The enthusiasm shown in flagging off trains with fanfare should also be shown in action towards railway safety and well-being of passengers, he said. "The same enthusiasm of flagging trains with fanfare and propaganda should also be shown in action towards railway safety and the well-being of crores of daily passengers," Kharge said on X (formerly Twitter).
Kharge also expressed his "deepest condolences to the families of the bereaved," and prayed for "the speedy recovery of the injured."
In a post on Facebook, Rahul Gandhi expressed his anguish over several deaths and injuries in the train accident in Vizianagaram.
"I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and hope for the speedy recovery of all those who are injured," he said.
He also urged Congress workers of the region to provide all possible assistance to the administration in relief and rescue operations.
According to a Railways official, the Railways has already started the process of distributing ex-gratia amount. “Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh to over 50 injured,” the official said.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a day earlier, announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each of the deceased, and Rs 50,000 to each of the injured, the PMO said on X.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy is scheduled to visit the accident site on Monday.
Reddy, over a post on X, expressed shock and concern over the train accident and instructed authorities to implement urgent relief actions.
Jagan Mohan Reddy also instructed officials to pay an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh each to the injured from the state. The Andhra Pradesh CM also said a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the injured from other states will be given.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also expressed his grief over the death of passengers in the train accident.
Patnaik directed Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Sudam Marndi to visit the train accident site to meet the injured at the hospital.
