A man carrying Rs 8 lakh worth of new currency notes was detained from 80 Feet Road of the city after he could not account for the cash on Thursday evening. Following a tip off, a team of Bhaktinagar police questioned a man standing near Employees State Insurance Hospital on 80 Feet Road of the city. The man identified himself as one Hiren Joshi (34), a resident of Gondal town of Rajkot district. On searching him, police found Rs 8 lakh cash from him.

“We questioned him about the large amount of cash he was carrying. He told us that one Kuldeepsinh Parmar of Gondal had given him the money and that he was to deliver the cash to a man who was to come to the hospital and collect it,” Vikram Lamba, in-charge police inspector of Bhaktinagar said.

This is fifth such seizure of new currency notes in the city since November 8 when old notes of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 denominations were demonetised. Police said that Joshi was a taxi driver and a resident of Gondal. “We suspect that he was acting as a courier. He claims that Parmar had asked Joshi to stand near the hospital where a man would come and collect cash from him. But before the receiver could come, we caught Joshi,” Lamba further said.

Police have detained Joshi and seized 400 notes of Rs 2,000 denomination under Section 41 (1) (d) of the Code of Criminal Procedure for the purpose of investigation.
