Rahul Gandhi on Sacred Games row: My father lived, died for India, no ‘character’ can change that

Days after a Kolkata Congress worker filed a complaint against Netflix and producers of the web series Sacred Games for allegedly insulting former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said freedom of expression is a “fundamental democratic right”. He said the views of a character of a fictional web series cannot change the fact that his father Rajiv Gandhi “lived and died in the service of India”.

“BJP/RSS believe (that) the freedom of expression must be policed & controlled. I believe this freedom is a fundamental democratic right. My father lived and died in the service of India. The views of a character on a fictional web series can never change that,” Rahul tweeted.

The Congress had initially backed the local leader who filed the complaint, saying everyone has the right to protest in a peaceful, democratic manner. The Congress high command had argued that some dialogues in the show were based on lies projected by the BJP for “political gains”.
