Though  he has now joined the BJP, Daljit Singh Kohli — the half brother of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh — had been alleging all along that his son was implicated falsely in a gambling case by the state police because of his ties to the Prime Minister. Dalbir’s son, Kanwar Kohli, had been booked and arrested by the Amritsar police for allegedly gambling on October 9, 2011, after police had raided the premises of Shalimar Resorts.
Kanwar was released on bail soon after.

Amidst allegations that the police were not investigating the case properly, the probe was handed to IG Dr S S Chohan and on the basis of his investigation on May 28, 2013, another FIR was registered, this time against police officials for pocketing the money recovered during the alleged gambling.

The challan in the case was presented in a court on February 7, 2014. Just two months after the registration of the case, Daljit Singh joined the BJP on Friday.

While Daljit Singh was not available for comments, his elder brother, Surjeet Singh Kohli said he did not know anything about the case.

Kanwar Kohli, on the other hand, said it was his father’s decision to join BJP and added that he did not know the reason. “I was intrigued when the case was registered against me. My name was used and I remember my father saying I was falsely implicated. But I cannot say anything right now. Please do not drag me into the issue,” he said.
