Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal said on Wednesday that India has seen a big change in the quality of toys as now almost 85-90% toys pass the quality tests against 33% in 2019.

Addressing a press conference, Goyal said, “This is a glaring example of success of quality… We implemented the Quality Control Order on Toys from the 1st January 2021…Despite a lot of pressure, we withstood that pressure, implemented it… We were able to ensure the safety and security of all our children.”

“In fact, the QCI [Quality Council of India] had done a study where they had found that nearly 30% toys which were used before the quality control order were substandard and unsafe for children to use…Therefore it became imperative to introduce quality control order,” Goyal said.

As per the Consumer Affairs Ministry, a total of 115 QCOs covering 493 products have been notified for compulsory BIS certification by the respective line ministries/departments.

“Till May 2014, only 14 TR/QCOs covering 106 products were notified for compulsory BIS certification…. After May 2014, a further 101 QCOs have been notified,” said an official.
