Amid continued protests by Opposition members, both Houses of Parliament were adjourned till Friday morning. After the Rajya Sabha resumed, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal addressed the newly announced 25% US tariffs, stating that India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interest. In a suo motu statement in the Lok Sabha, he added that the government is closely assessing the implications of US President Trump’s decision, with the tariffs set to take effect from August 1.

Reaffirming the government’s stance, he emphasized its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests of Indian farmers, workers, entrepreneurs, exporters, MSMEs, and industries across sectors.

“We will take all necessary steps to protect and promote our national interests,” he added.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday announced that N K Premachandran has been nominated as an empanelled member to preside over the proceedings of the House.

A leader of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), Premachandran represents Kerala's Kollam constituency.

Birla made the announcement in the House that Premachandran has been nominated to preside over the proceedings under Section 9 in Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha. (PTI)

Lauding Home Minister Amit Shah's reply to the debate on Operation Sindoor in the Rajya Sabha as phenomenal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that he categorically expressed the government's stand on national security, including uprooting of terror networks.

In posts on X, Modi praised External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's "exceptional" speech as well.

He emphasised India's efforts to make terrorism a subject of global attention, highlighted the country's fitting response through Operation Sindoor and how the government is increasing the safety of citizens, Modi said.

Posting the link to Shah's speech, he said, "A phenomenal speech by Home Minister Amit Shah Ji in the Rajya Sabha. He categorically expressed our Government's point of view on key aspects relating to national security, uprooting terror networks and the success of Operation Sindoor." (PTI)

Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan on Wednesday questioned why India's retaliatory action post-Pahalgam attack was named "Operation Sindoor", when women were widowed in the incident and actually "lost their sindoor".

Participating in a debate on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor in the Rajya Sabha, the SP MP was also seen objecting to interruptions from other MPs. The actor-turned politician, who is known for her sharp temper, was urged by the Chair not to pay attention to others.

Bachhan replied saying she has "sharp ears", and at one point, she was seen telling Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, who was sitting next to her, "don't control me". Bachchan paid condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the Pahalgam attack.

"It feels strange because whatever happened looks like fiction, people came, killed so many, nothing happened. It's really unreal," she said.

"I talk from my heart... You have appointed bid writers, who give fancy names... Why did you name it Sindoor? Sindoor to ujad gaya logo ka (they lost their Sindoor)... Those who were killed, their wives were left behind," she said.

"The tourists who went there, why did they go there? After abolition of Article 370, they were chest thumping that terrorism will be finished... what happened? The tourists went there believing that," she said.

"You have destroyed the faith and trust of people you promised. Those families will never forgive you. You do not have the ability to apologise to those families," she said. "Humility in power is very important," she said.

"The Defence Minister said we are self-reliant, we are manufacturing this and that, what is the point when you were not even able to save 25-26 people... Bombs will not help, basic humanity is required," she said.

"No dispute can be silenced by violence alone. I am sorry to say one department where you are very poor is humility," she said. She also quoted Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien, and said, "Derek said a good thing -- the weaker the argument, the more aggressive the body language".

"Be humble, be kind, be protective towards people who have given you this position and authority with hope that you will protect them... Protect them, please say sorry," she said.

JP Nadda continues his address in Rajya Sabha. He says, "I would like to say that this is a sensitive government. In the same spirit, its entire strategy and planning, including how it intends to act in the future, were being discussed in detail. Yesterday, the Prime Minister gave a comprehensive address on many of these issues in the Lok Sabha, which was heard not just across the country but also internationally. The Home Minister also shed light on several important aspects, and today, the Foreign Minister discussed other key elements. Therefore, I will not repeat those points.

As the minister of the concerned department, he has taken responsibility on behalf of the country through this Parliament. But I would like to raise one important point, something we must reflect on seriously. It is undeniable that the role played by our brave armed forces and police during the entire incident deserves deep respect and tribute from the nation. But through this House, I want to emphasise that political leadership also plays a crucial role, because it is the political leadership that commands the armed forces. That is why there is a clear difference between a responsible, responsive, sensitive, and proactive government, one that acts as per the demands of the situation, and another type of government altogether: an inactive government, one with a lukewarm attitude, and one that is non-reactive and non-responsive. To understand this difference, we must not look at the Pahalgam incident in isolation. Doing so would be an injustice, both to the nation and to the larger narrative. We need to view the situation in its entirety."

Lauding Operation Sindoor, JP Nadda says it was measured and precise. No terrorists are left at the sites, he added.

Political leadership is extremely important as it gives directions to the armed forces, says J P Nadda in Rajya Sabha. Taking a dig at the Congress, the Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers said, " No action was taken after Delhi, Varanasi, Mumbai bomb blasts, shows the insensitivity of then government."

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari says, "... It does not happen in any country that the Parliament discusses whether the nation won the war or not. But it is the courage of the central government that it accepted it. Rahul Gandhi is using shallow language. He used a similar tone for the PM... The dynasty from which he comes, he cannot accept that anyone from outside the family is the Prime Minister... PM Modi categorically said that no leader of the world made us stop the war..."

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday urged the Centre to waive loans for the flood and landslide victims from her parliamentary constituency of Wayanad, and lamented the "lack" of central assistance in helping the affected people rebuild their lives.

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Vadra said hundreds of people lost their lives, 17 families were wiped out, and more than 1,600 buildings were destroyed in the landslides and floods. (PTI)

EAM Jaishankar said in Rajya Sabha, "When Operation Sindoor commenced, a number of countries were in touch with us to see how serious the situation was and how long it would go... We gave the same message to all the countries... that we were not open to any mediation. Anything between us and Pakistan will only be bilateral... And that we were responding to the Pakistani attack, and we would keep responding. If that fighting was to stop, Pakistan must make a request. And that request could only come through the channel of the DGMO..."

EAM Jaishankar said in the Rajya Sabha, "I want to tell them (Opposition) that from April 22 to June 16 there has been no phone call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump."

"We gave a message that India is not open to mediation, we will not accept nuclear blackmail," he added.
