Over 10 lakh job cards have been deleted with the reason ‘fake job card’ under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (Mahatma Gandhi NREGS) in the last two financial years – 2021-22 and 2022-23 – the government informed Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
In a written reply to a question, Minister of State for Rural Development Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti said, “Job Card deletion/updation is a continuous process and this exercise is being conducted by the states on a regular basis. As per Section 25 of the Act, whoever contravenes the provisions of this Act shall on conviction be liable to a fine which may extend to one thousand rupees. Also, Aadhaar seeding has been made mandatory for the de-duplication of the beneficiaries data base to prevent fake Job Card issuance.”
As per the data provided with the reply, 3.06 lakh job cards were deleted with the reason ‘fake job card’ under the NREGS during 2021-22, while 7.43 lakh job cards were deleted during 2022-23.
The highest number of fake job cards have been deleted in Uttar Pradesh—67,937 in 2021-22, and 2.96 lakh in 2022-23. The state is followed by Madhya Pradesh where 50,817 fake job cards were deleted in 2021-22 and 1.14 lakh in 2022-23.
As per the minister’s reply, only 388 fake job cards have been deleted in West Bengal during 2021-22, while in 2022-23, the figure stood at 5,263.
