A 40-year-old BJP worker was strangled to death by Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on Monday night after they accused him of being a police informer, officials said.
Satyam Punem became the 12th BJP worker killed by Maoists in Chhattisgarh since January 2023. The last such killing was last December, when a 35-year-old BJP worker, Kudiyam Maodo, was murdered in the Kutru area of Bijapur.
On Monday, after 10 pm, a small group of Maoists attacked Satyam Punem and strangled him to death in Mujalkanker village, which comes under the jurisdiction of Ilmidi police station. The police station is situated seven kilometres from the village and 40 kilometres from Bijapur district headquarters.
The Maoists also dropped a handwritten note, claiming responsibility for the murder. The note, written in red ink, accused Punem of being a police informer and claimed that the outfit had warned him in the past to stop helping the police. He was also blamed for providing information that led to arrests made by security forces in their area.
This takes the total number of civilians killed this year by Maoists in Chhattisgarh to 40, including some who were killed in blasts caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by the outlawed group. Last year, 71 civilians were killed in Maoist violence in Chhattisgarh.
From January 2024, operations by security forces led to a total of 472 Maoists being gunned down in Chhattisgarh. In this period, 39 security personnel have also lost their lives in the fight against Left Wing Extremism.
