Indian Railways meals on premium trains, How to Book Train Ticket Without Food: Has Indian Railways (IR) made meals compulsory on premium trains such as the Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express or Vande Bharat Express? This topic has gained attention after several users took to X (formerly Twitter) claiming that the IRCTC app and website now make meal selection mandatory while booking tickets for these trains. It’s interesting to note that most travellers in India still choose trains over any other means of transport.
Speaking to IndianExpress.com, a senior railway official dismissed claims that the ‘No Food’ option has been removed while booking tickets on premium trains. The official added that the ‘No Food’ option is still available on the same page with only minor changes made to its placement. “Option to opt out is available on same page,” the official said.

Here’s how to book tickets without food on IRCTC
To book an e-ticket through the IRCTC website, an user must first create an account on the portal.
Login by entering your User name and Password.
Provide your desired From – To station, Date of Journey and Class of travel.
To find train list, click on “Search” option.
The next page displays the list of trains available for the selected route.
To select the train from the train list, click on the type of class available in the selected train.
To book e-ticket in the selected train, click on “Book Now” button.
Passenger Reservation Page will appear; check whether the train name, station names, class and journey date displayed on the page are same as desired by you.
Enter the Name of the Passengers, Age, Gender, Berth Preference etc. details for each passenger.
Scroll down to the ‘Other Preference’ section, where you can select the option ‘I don’t want Food/Beverages’ to opt out of meals while booking your train ticket.
