Kerala man walks into police station, confesses to killing 5, including 13-year-old brother, grandmother

Murders took place across three villages in Thiruvananthapuram. Accused, who told police he took poison after the murders, has been admitted to hospital.

A 23-year-old man walked into a police station in Kerala on Monday and claimed to have killed six people. It was later revealed that five people were murdered and that his mother, who he allegedly attacked, is undergoing treatment after being seriously injured.

The accused, identified as Afan, claimed to have consumed poison after committing the murders and has been admitted to a hospital.

The series of murders, which allegedly took place during the day at three different villages in Thiruvananthapuram district, came to light in the evening after Afan turned himself in at Venjaramoodu police station.

Of the five people killed, four were related to Afan. Police said he told them that financial issues were behind the killings.

According to police, Afan first allegedly killed his father’s mother, Salma Beevi, a native of Pangode, in the morning. Later, he travelled to another village, S N Puram, where his next targets were his father Raheem’s brother Latheef and his wife Shahida. In the evening, he was back at his own house and allegedly hacked to death his 13-year-old brother and a woman who is thought to have been is friend. His mother was also attacked and was seriously injured.

Thiruvananthapuram district panchayat member Binu S Nair, who represents the region where the murders took place, said the bodies found at the accused’s home had sustained heavy wounds on their heads, indicating that they were bludgeoned to death.

A local resident said Afan’s woman friend had been at the house for the last two days and there were family disputes over this. Afan does not have any known criminal background.

Afan’s father works in West Asia and theirs was a middle class family.
