Former prime minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said he hoped the “Kartarpur model” may help in resolving future conflicts, as he and Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu addressed a special session of the Punjab Assembly to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak.
Manmohan Singh also spoke about the issue of drug trade. “Punjab is Guru Nanak Dev-ji’s karmabhoomi. How will we keep his legacy alive if its youth is wasted with drugs, water is becoming poisonous and women are being disrespected. It is the most crucial question on his 550th birth anniversary,” he said.
“Peace and harmony is the only way forward to ensure a prosperous future. The Kartarpur model may be replicated in future too for lasting resolution of conflicts,” the senior Congress leader said.
Naidu began his keynote address in Punjabi, saying that it is quite appropriate that the temple of democracy is dedicating a special session to one of India’s most democratic spiritual leaders. He added that a new world of peace and sustainable development could be founded if teachings of the Sikh guru were integrated in daily life. Complimenting Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and Vidhan Sabha Speaker Rana K P Singh for convening the session, Naidu said he hoped this initiative would go a long way in spreading the message and teachings of Guru Nanak.
Amarinder made a call for the protection of nature to save future generations from the devastating effects of environmental pollution.
Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar, Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala, Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda attended the event. Punjab and Haryana Governors — V P Singh Badnore and Satyadev Narayan Arya — also attended the session.
