Kundiyan and Patroo – two remote villages in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district, along the Line of Control – have got electricity for the first time. The development will touch the lives of around 1,300 residents.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Deputy Commissioner, Kupwara, Ayushi Sudan said, “Until now, the villages were getting electricity through the operation of diesel generator sets for four hours a day. They have now been connected to the grid.”
Two sub-stations of 250 KV were completed under the Samirdh Seema Yojana by the KPDCL Electric Division Kupwara to electrify the villages. Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri inaugurated these on Wednesday.
“From officers to linemen of PDD, local PRIs and contractors, all have contributed in timely completion of this electrification project, which was handed over to people in a record time of two months. It is a big achievement and testimony of transformation down at the grassroots level,” she said.
Additionally, she said that by the end of this year, all villages of Keran will get BSNL mobile network. Other service providers, including Airtel and Jio, “will be roped in” for providing and enhancing phone connectivity to the area.
Block development chairman, Keran, Mohammad Syed Khoja while said that for the residents, this is a dream come true. “We used to receive two to three hours of low voltage power through a decade-old diesel generator set, which could hardly light up a bulb. We were using candles to light up our homes. Now our children will study under electric lights and perform well.”
