President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said that the recent incidents of alleged racial violence involving people from Northeastern states of the country are extremely distressing. He called for expeditious measures to assuage the feelings of people from that part of the country. He was speaking at the two-day conference of governors at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh too expressed his concerns over the recurring incidents of intolerance and prejudice against people who have relocated from one state to another.

“Recently, our capital city was witness to one such incident in which a student belonging to the Northeast lost his life to senseless violence. Such incidents cannot be tolerated in any civilized society and those who are responsible for them should be dealt with firmly. It is imperative that we work collectively towards ensuring that all our citizens, irrespective of where they belong to, feel safe, secure and welcome in all parts of the country,” Singh said, adding that the government had recently constitutes a committee to look into the issue and suggest remedial measures.

He outlined the initiatives taken by the government for the socio-economic development of the Northeast particularly in the areas of rail, road, air and telecom connectivity.

In his speech, the President also reminded the governors that they are the first citizens of their states who draw their authority from the Constitution and are oath-bound to protect, preserve and defend it.
