No need for new anti-conversion law, says Heptulla

The BJP MP, however, clarified that when her party would take a call on the issue, she would toe the party line.

Even as several BJP leaders are demanding a new, “stricter” anti-conversion law amidst the ‘ghar wapsi’ row, Minority Affairs Minister Najma Heptulla on Wednesday said there was no need for a new legislation and that the existing laws are sufficient to deal with the issue.

The BJP MP, however, clarified that when her party would take a call on the issue, she would toe the party line.

“There are so many laws in the country (to deal with conversions). If there is a consensus on more laws, I will have to abide by the party’s directions. As for the government’s response on the issue, when the Prime Minister makes a statement from the ramparts of the Red Fort (about moratorium on communal riots), I think he has made himself amply clear and does not need to reiterate it on demand,” Heptulla said.

In a freewheeling chat at the Indian Womens’ Press Corps, Heptulla did not rubbish speculations about her imminent change of assignment as a Governor, saying if required she would don another mantle.
Speculations have been doing round for some time that when Heptulla turns 75 later this year, she may be shunted out to Raj Bhavan, leaving junior minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi in charge. Asked about it, she said: “I cannot stop my age. If at 75, I need to move to another job, fine I will do it.”
