It has been an endless wait for Baldev Singh of Maneawali village in Muktsar. For over 20 days he has been forced to watch his fields inundated by flood waters, while his newly built house has just been drained. Flood waters partially damaged my house but its assessment has not been done till date. I have got ration only twice, he said.
His fellow residents are in a similar state as the village is still flooded by 3-4 feet of water on its connecting roads. Fed up with skin infections and fever, villagers are now taking precautionary medicines to avoid any disease outbreak.
At Lundewala village,a railway track on one end has trapped water in the area while the natural flow through drains has been poor. Vajeer Singh, from this village said: On Wednesday, the chief minister announced that the pending shagun and pension cases of flood-affected villages will be cleared soon. I am surprised at his equation. Now villagers who want to get their pending amount as per social welfare schemes, need to flood their villages just to get these grants.
Of the 270 villages in Mukstar district, nearly 230 have been affected by the floods. At Bhunder, roads and fields are submerged in water. With the district administration reluctant to tamper with a state highway at one end of the village, the excess water has been left to drain out through canals.
At Haraj and Udaikaran, villagers are blaming the administration for lack of planning. More than 60 per cent of patients in the affected villages have been suffering from skin infections while doctors are carrying typhoid vaccinations.
