The UPSC row Tuesday rocked the Parliament, with parties demanding that aspirants should be allowed to take the exam not just in Hindi and English but every Indian language. Proceedings of both Lok Sabha (LS) and Rajya Sabha (RS) were disrupted as parties demanded that PM Narendra Modi make a statement in Parliament.

RS plunged into turmoil as nine parties, including the Congress, demanded suspension of Question Hour to discuss the issue. While Chairman Hamid Ansari gave a chance to every leader to speak, he refused to suspend Question Hour, resulting in ruckus and adjournment of the House twice. Opposition members demanded a discussion and an assurance from the government that its decision would be kept in abeyance.

Some Congress members demanded setting up of a Joint Parliamentary Committee to look into the issue.

The LS also saw a 15-minute adjournment during Zero Hour when SP and RJD members entered the Well to protest. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan asked them to give notice for their demand for a discussion. Sources said the government could agree for a discussion Wednesday.

“Other Indian languages have to be included in the preliminary exam. Our students who do not speak Hindi are losing out even in entrance exam,” DMK’s Kanimozhi said.
